Another funny CollegeHumor video, though LowROI on Digg brought up a good point:
I don’t think he’s really trying to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. Hot chick/ugly guy has been a sitcom staple for decades (The Flintstones, The Drew Carey show, The King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond etc). Love it or hate it, Family Guy (I can’t speak for The Cleveland show because I’ve never seen it) is only a of parody of American sitcoms of the 20th century. The plots may be nonsensical and at times just plain retarded, but the basic framework is just the standard sitcom, sans laugh track.
American Dad, while still comprised of the same cookie cutter family, really is a different show. Its point driven plot is contingent, and its scope of humor really is directed at the current state of affairs in America, and not the “manatee formula” that seems to have taken over Family Guy.
